Bead embroidery is a technique that has been utilized in many different cultures. I start with a piece of genuine leather as my base. Leather gives a firm, yet supple backing that I find much superior to other methods. It's a little harder to sew on, but I think its worth the extra effort. All my pieces are then backed with high quality faux leather. I use faux leather because it is thinner than genuine leather giving a much nicer edge to the finished piece.
